Online Services

There's many different types of real-time information web pages. These can be:
  • Timetables
  • News
  • Sports updates
  • Weather reports
  • Travel news
Some timetable URL's include:
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ldb.aspx

News URL's:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/

Sports update URL's:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/

Weather report URL's:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/

Travel news URL's:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/motorways

The difference of a real-time information webpage (compared with an ordinary web page) is that it automatically updates every second or minute to keep the information up to date, such as: news, traffic information, and weather.  An ordinary web page keeps the information the same, as the old information is archived.
An ordinary web page’s html starts with ‘www.’ meaning World Wide Web. Whereas a real-time information web page begins with ‘http://www’.
Real-time information web page’s end with ‘.aspx’ which means the information is from a database where it is updated automatically as the information is sent.

One group of people who'll find real-time information pages useful are workers.
Generally, worker's need weather travel news and timetables in order to get to work on time. As a large percentage of the population work, whether it be on public transport or the car. People who take the car will need travel news so they know there won't be any accidents or delays on their journey. Prehaps weather reports also.
On the other hand, sportmans or people who share the same hobby would use the sports news as a real-time information page as they'd want to know the latest score and news and they can rely on the content being reliable and constantly updated. It's also useful for portable devices.

Real-time information is a convenience all round because it's:
  • Time saving  - People won't waste time on their journey as they would've checked for inconveniences on the way.
  • Less stressful.
  • Portable - Users can find this information whilst on their journey as it can be avaliable on mobile devices. This way they can check for information whilst they're outside rather than just at home.
  • It's easy to check on any device whether it be a mobile, tablet or laptop.
On the other hand however, there are some drawbacks of using real-time information web pages. These can include:
  • Some people don't use electrical devices on the go which may cause an inconveniences as they don't have access to the information.
  • You need the internet to visit the web pages, so if the internet is down or there's no wi-fi where you are, it causes problems to occur.
  • Bandwidth is where there's multiple frequencies to try and transmit signals. If there's no signal then there's no way of connecting to the internet.
  • Some devices restrict you from connecting to the internet.
  • If your internet broadband allowance only let's you use a certain amount of internet (i.e - 20GB) then it could cause you to go over your bill or it stops you from going over the allowance.
